The Maldives is an independent country with a population of 357566 people. The Maldives belongs to the United Nations (UN), the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), the Commonwealth, and a number of other international organizations. Tourism, fishing, and construction are the main economic activities. The economy relies heavily on tourism to generate foreign currency, and 99 percent of household goods are imported from other countries. The rufiyaa is the local currency, but the US Dollar is widely accepted throughout the country.

Not every island is inhabited. In reality, only about 200 of the islands are inhabited. The remainder are used for a variety of activities, the most important of which is tourism.
