Montenegro is the Italian name for the tiny new country of Crna Gora. Montenegro’s “Black Mountain” translation may sound drab, but the country is a veritable rainbow of hues. Flower-covered for most of the year, this mountainous land is punctuated by dark greens of pine, beech, and birch as turquoise streams rush to the sea. Beaches of yellow and volcanic grey, as well as huddles of orange-roofed houses, dot the coastline from border to border, making it look like a postcard.

Traveling to Montenegro? Here are some ideas:

The coastline’s beaches and charming old towns entice tourists, but the region’s crown jewel, the stunningly picturesque town of Kotor, is located just a few miles inland at the mouth of a fjord-like bay. In addition to Budva’s beachfront, you should also visit the ruins of Stari Bar. If you’re looking for a vacation away from the coast, Durmitor’s national park and Montenegro’s old capital, Cetinje, are both worthwhile destinations.
