If you are planning a vacation to South America, perhaps the first place to visit is Suriname. Suriname is located on the northeast coast of South America, about 500 kilometers (310 miles) from the coast of Venezuela. It is defined by wide swaths of lush rainforest, Dutch colonial architecture, and the distinctive melting pot society. Suriname’s Atlantic coast is where the second largest city, Paramaribo, is located, where palms grow near Fort Zeelandia, an early trading post.

You may think that it would be difficult to see all of Suriname. In fact, the island is very accessible. There are direct flights from most cities around the world, as well as cruises from the Mediterranean Sea. One way to get there is with an afternoon flight from Caracas, Venezuela, which leaves at 2 p.m. and arrives onshore at the mouth of the Amazon River. You can then board a boat that takes you directly to the island.

There are also four-sailing regattas held each year, to allow visitors to see the insides of the island and to get a sense of the local culture. You can also go hiking along the rainforests terrain to get a taste of the native culture and see unique animals such as the giant anteaters. There are a few hotels in Suriname that offer guest accommodations, such as beachside cottages, that are private and have their own waterfront access. These types of accommodations are often the most expensive and can be booked through private travel agents.

Suriname offers beautiful views of the ocean and coastline. The majority of tourists that seeing Suriname do so from the coast, as it is the preferred way to see the island. However, if you like to see nature up close and personal, you can also see the island from the air. Because there are few large bodies of water on the island, there is little development, but there are two small airports that offer charter services for people who wish to fly to see nature up close. These charter services operate out of a small landing strip on the western end of the island. There are also a couple of marinas along the coast that offer water tours.

When you arrive at your destination, you may want to rent a car or ride a motorcycle instead of walking. Suriname has a paved road network, so you will not have to worry about traveling on dirt roads. There is no need to buy a boat unless you wish to hire a boatman to take you on a scenic river trip. Most visitors arrive by plane, so they can see nature up close and personal.

When you visit Suriname, you will find a wide variety of lodging available to you, depending upon your budget and needs. Most hotels provide guests with a balcony or veranda to view the surrounding scenery. If you plan to stay at a hotel in Suriname, it is advised that you book your room long before you travel to the island. It can be difficult to get rooms during the peak travel season, but you will also find that most hotels offer discounts and other types of promotions to keep their rooms occupied.
